Statistician Of The Year 2003 - Geoff Wilde
Mr Midwinter announced that the award would go this year to Geoff Wilde, for his books in the Famous
Cricketers Series, which had become a model for future books. Mr Wilde had also contributed to the Journal
and had been a regular attender at our meetings almost from day one.
In reply Mr Wilde said he was greatly honoured to receive the award. He went on to say that he continued
to be concerned at the number of errors which had occurred in some of the recent Famous Cricketers books
and felt that the ACS was putting style before substance. On another topic he felt that AGM's should be
devoted largely to discussions on statistical problems – he recalled the debate we had on `three-man
partnerships', as an example. Responding briefly to Mr Wilde, Mr Lambert said that the previous day, the
Trustees had met and discussed in some detail the best ways of reducing `errors' in ACS publications. It
was intended that the Committee would take appropriate action in the immediate future, to solve the problem.
They would also be discussing the format for future AGM's.
